‘Train wreck!’ Former Labour MP lashes out at prospect of Corbyn as PM during Brexit chaos

Gavin Shuker says the independents and Change MPs who would not serve under Jeremy Corbyn would do anything possible not to support him. He claimed there are even some MPs from the Labour Party who “can’t bring themselves” to back their leader. Mr Shuker told The Sun: “There are Labour MPs who admit privately they cant bring themselves to do it.

“The rag tag group of Independents, many of whom left the Labour Party because of Corbyn, will find every excuse not to vote for him.”

The former Labour MP has predicted a “messy three-way split” to dominate the House of Commons during any confidence vote.

He also claimed Boris Johnson would triumph over his rivals if the alternative was Mr Corbyn as Prime Minister just for “one day”.

Mr Shuker added: “Expect a messy three-way split – for Corbyn, against, and sitting-on-their-hands, right across the House of Commons.”

Last week, the Labour leader stepped up the pressure on Mr Johnson writing to the Liberal Democrats, the SNP and rebel Tories in the hope of gaining enough support to oust the Prime Minister.

Mr Corbyn has vowed to call a no confidence vote in the Government, which would require majority support from the House of Commons, at the “earliest opportunity when we can be confident of success”.

He wants to delay Brexit further by securing an extension to the Article 50 process, taking the UK past the October 31 deadline by which Mr Johnson has vowed to take Britain out of the European Union, “do or die”.

In the letter, he wrote: “This Government has no mandate for no deal, and the 2016 EU referendum provided no mandate for no deal.

“I therefore intend to table a vote of no confidence at the earliest opportunity when we can be confident of success.

“Following a successful vote of no confidence in the Government, I would then, as Leader of the Opposition, seek the confidence of the house for a strictly time-limited temporary government with the aim of calling a general election, and securing the necessary extension of Article 50 to do so.”

Mr Corbyn insisted Labour would campaign in a resulting general election for a second referendum on EU membership with the option to Remain being available to voters.

But his plan is already facing stiff opposition from the very support he needs to be successful with his plan and build an emergency Government.

It has been rejected by the Liberal Democrats and anti-no deal alliance MPs, including a number of senior politicians such as former Attorney General Dominic Grieve.

Mr Grieve has warned he could vote against the Government in a confidence vote but insisted he would never help Mr Corbyn into power at 10 Downing Street.

He said: “Jeremy Corbyn is unfortunately a deeply divisive figure and in trying to stop a no deal Brexit it is not my purpose to help him into Downing Street.”

Tory former minister Sir Oliver Letwin also told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: “That appears to be his agenda, I have to say it is not one I personally share.

“I don’t think it’s at all likely that a majority would be formed for that and I personally wouldn’t want to vote for it.

“I wouldn’t be able to support that, no.”

Liberal Democrat leader Jo Swinson also rejected the plan, and warned Mr Corbyn would not be able to gain enough Conservative Party support or even votes from former Labour MPs sitting as independents.

She has proposed Parliamentary veterans Ken Clarke or Harriet Harman as “neutral” figures who could lead a temporary Government.

An Express.co.uk poll has revealed Mr Coryn becoming Prime Minister scares you more than a no deal Brexit.

The poll, which ran from 10am on Friday August 16 until 4pm on Saturday August 17, saw a huge 29,986 of you vote.

We asked “What do you fear more – a no deal Brexit or Jeremy Corbyn?”

A massive 85.7 percent (25,685 readers) said they were more terrified of Mr Corbyn becoming the country’s next Prime Minister.

Just 13.3 percent (3,999 readers) thought Britain leaving the EU on October 31 without an agreement in place was a worse prospect, while the remaining one percent (302 readers) voted ‘Don’t know’.
