Peterborough by-election: Brexit Party’s Mike Greene SPURRED ON by academic’s criticism

Mike Greene is hoping to become the Brexit Party’s first MP. Mr Greene, who featured as a guest on Channel 4 show The Secret Millionaire, is running against Tory candidate Paul Bristow and Labour MP Lisa Forbes, along with a further 12 candidates. The bookies have cast Mr Greene as the likely winner to become the city’s next MP, with generous odds of 1/5.

The Peterborough by-election was called after the city’s previous MP, Labour’s Fiona Onasanya, was jailed for lying about a speeding offence.

As he took to the stage to launch his campaign, Mr Greene said he strongly believed in education as a tool for mobility.

Flanked by Brexit Party leader Nigel Farage, Mr Greene also told the conference how he was inspired by a Cambridge academic who had once described his as ‘social waste’.

After being introduced at the conference, Mr Greene said: “One of the things I’m passionate about is education.

“Because Diane Reay, a leading academic from Cambridge University, described schools like mine as a ‘demonised depository for social waste’.

“Children should never be labelled lie that and I’m passionate about some of those things.

“Having travelled around the world, there are great places and troubled places in every city, in every country.

“There’s more good than bad in Peterborough which is why we choose to make that our home.

“In the same way any businessman, or anyone, talks about politics I’ve been passionate.

“But it’s reached a point where I couldn’t sit back anymore – this city, like this country – can do so much better.”

After Mr Greene’s speech, party leader Mr Farage said: “I think Mike has lived in the kind of righteous indignation about what has happened since the Brexit vote.

“The broken promises when 500 MPs voted for Article 50 and we all thought we were leaving on march 29 – it hasn’t happened – because the can keeps getting kicked down the road.

“Mike is a solid citizen who stood up and said “I am prepared to make a stand.”
