Brexit snub: Trump has NO interest in UK trade, all he wants is chaos – shock claim

Michael H Fuchs senior fellow at the Centre for American Progress, has claimed the US President is an “agent of chaos” and Britain leaving the bloc without an agreement on October 31 will play right into his rhetoric. The US political expert has questioned the future of the alliance between the two nations and insisted Brexit could create a “significantly downgraded relationship”. Washington has taken a keen interest in Brexit negotiations and has said the UK would be “first in line” for a trade deal with the US.

Last week John Bolton, US national security adviser, met with Boris Johnson and reiterated Washington’s commitment to a bilateral trade agreement.

Mr Bolton said: “The main purpose of the visit really is to convey President Trump’s desire to see a successful exit from the European Union for the United Kingdom on October 31, to offer to be of help in any way that we can and to express his hope we can have a fully comprehensive bilateral trade agreement with the United Kingdom as soon as possible.”

However, Mr Fuchs dismissed any chance of a deal and insisted any agreement is based on “false promises”.

He wrote in the The Guardian Journal: “In fact, the reality of a post-Brexit US-UK alliance could be just the opposite of the false promises being peddled by Trump and Bolton: the longer-term impacts of Brexit could include a significantly downgraded relationship between the two nations.”

The US policy expert also warned the UK against putting all their hope on the US post-Brexit.

Mr Fuchs added: “Trump has no interest in the US-UK alliance – he’s an agent of chaos, and supporting Brexit is yet another way for him to upend international norms.

“Trump’s disdain for allies should be fair warning to those who think the president might be willing to offer fair trade terms to Britain.”

He added: “If the current UK Government believes that the US will shower rewards on Britain in the wake of Brexit, or that it will somehow bail Britain out, they’re wrong.”

Mr Johnson has pledged a “do or die” Brexit by October 31, however if Britain leaves without an agreement, congress could block any trade deals with the US.

Nancy Pelosi, speaker of the House of Representatives said there will be “no chance” of a deal if Britain’s exit undermines the Good Friday Agreement.

Ms Pelosi said: “If Brexit undermines the Good Friday accord, there will be no chance of a US-UK trade agreement passing the Congress.”

This afternoon the Prime Minister made his first official oversees trip and was given a huge boost in Brexit negotiations by Angela Merkel.

In Berlin, the German Chancellor told Mr Johnson the Brexit impasse could be solved within 30 days.

After a defiant Mr Johnson said the controversial Irish backstop had to be removed from the withdrawal agreement, Ms Merkel said the mechanism has always been “fallback position” and would only come into effect if no other solution could be agreed that would protect the “integrity of the single market”.

She added: “If one is able to solve this conundrum, if one finds this solution, we said we would probably find it in the next two years to come but we can also maybe find it in the next 30 days to come.

“Then we are one step further in the right direction and we have to obviously put our all into this.”
