Boris Johnson has admitted that the NHS Test and Trace system needs to improve to provide faster results and reach more contacts. This comes after the latest figures revealed the shocking failures of the coronavirus task force, including that only 15.1 percent of people who were tested received their result within 24 hours. Stephen Barclay, the Chief Secretary to the Treasury, struggled to defend the Government against the attacks of BBC Radio 4’s Nick Robinson on the issue.

He told the minister: “Is it now time to say that regrettably the Test and Trace system, despite the fact it’s cost £12billion, is simply not going to change the course of this pandemic?

“It may be a sign of wasted money considering that fewer than 60 percent of contacts of people who have tested positive have been reached in the latest figures.

“15 percent of people having in-person tests have got them in the Prime Minister’s targets of 24 hours.

“So £12billion may have been put in, but it’s £12billion not spent very well.”
