Andrew Neil declares war on SNP and vows ‘fight back’ against Sturgeon: ‘Watch this space’

SNP ‘still grumpy’ over referendum result says Rees-Mogg

The veteran broadcaster is a continued vocal critic of the SNP, particularly the party’s repeated campaign for a second referendum on Scottish independence. He has lashed out at the handling of the coronavirus pandemic from Nicola Sturgeon’s Government over recent weeks and months. Mr Neil, who left the BBC earlier this year, is also preparing to launch his own television news channel that would likely rival the likes of Sky and even his former employer.

In a statement last year, he said GB News “will champion robust, balanced debate and a range of perspectives on the issues that affect everyone in the UK”.

He added the television news channel is “aimed at the vast number of British people who feel underserved and unheard by their media”.

Now, the veteran broadcaster has launched a scathing attack against the amount of censorship in Scotland, claiming there are “multiple threats pouring out from legal authorities”, and that is not “time to fight back”.

He tweeted: “Scotland is awash with government-inspired gags on the media, vital documents redacted, important evidence/submissions censored or buried.

“Multiple threats pouring out from legal authorities. Even at The Spectator.

“I think it’s time to fight back. Watch this space.”

The comments from Mr Neil were backed by several people on Twitter, including commentator Darren Grimes.

He said: “Great! It’s about time Scotland had decent opposition.”

One person wrote: “There are a growing number of Scottish voters wishing for a fightback against the SNP and their leader.”

A second Twitter user commented: “Good for you, Andrew.

“It’s about time our media started to question what’s going on in the Scottish Parliament.”

Another person wrote: “Thank you, Andrew.

SNP shamed for IndyRef2 pursuit as Scotland struggles with Covid [OPINION]

“We’re ‘sitting ducks’ here in Scotland.

“The three Scottish TV stations are flooded with never-ending SNP biased news and always about indyref2.

“Sturgeon gives daily lunchtime reports about Covid but always manages to have an anti-English ‘dig’ too.

“We need help!”

A fourth Twitter user added: “Please do. Scotland is a mess.

“We need our journalists to hold the Scottish government to account.”

Last July, the BBC announced Mr Neil was in talks about an interview role on BBC One.

He was even mentioned as a possible successor to BBC Chairman David Clementi, although he insisted he had no interest in the role.

In just his second day in the role, new director-general Tim Davie held talks with the veteran broadcaster “in an attempt to get him back to the BBC”.

But in September, Mr Neil announced his exit from the BBC to become chairman of GB News, a news channel set to launch over the coming months.

He will also present a prime-time evening programme on the news channel.

In a statement, Mr Neil said: “GB News is the most exciting thing to happen in British television news for more than 20 years.

“We will champion robust, balanced debate and a range of perspectives on the issues that affect everyone in the UK, not just those living in the London area.

“We’ve seen a huge gap in the market for a new form of television news.

“GB News is aimed at the vast number of British people who feel underserved and unheard by their media.”
