Pop icon Cyndi Lauper has been announced as the keynote speaker at the commencement ceremony at Northern Vermont University-Johnson.

The singer, who attended the college, then known as Johnson State College, between 1973 and 1974, will be delivering the commencement speech at the ceremony to be held on May 18. Lauper will also receive a Doctor of Letters Honorary Degree.

“She is a leading voice in issues of social justice and has used her art and entertaining ability to broaden understanding of marginalized populations. It will be an honour to give Ms. Lauper an honorary degree,” said Elaine C. Collins, the president of the university.
