Zara Tindall children: Why Lena and Mia won’t receive any royal titles from Queen

Zara and Mike Tindall have made few public appearances since the coronavirus crisis. The couple does not have to debut alongside their other family members, who all have duties to conduct. The difference between them and the senior royals are their titles, as they didn’t even receive offers from the Queen.

Their children also have no claim to titles, thanks to their grandmother.

None of Anne, Princess Royal’s family may claim a title due to her gender.

Royal titles travel patrilineally due to the rules of male primogeniture which govern the path of the crown.

As such, daughters of a monarch have no claim beyond the honours of Princess Royal unless they marry a man with a title.

Princess Anne married Mark Phillips in 1973, a man whose lineage is rooted in the military.

His lack of a title meant Princess Anne’s children couldn’t take one either.

The rules also apply to their children, so neither Mia nor Lena received a title despite their royal heritage.

There is another path to a title, as the Queen can offer honours to her children and grandchildren on their wedding days.

She once did so with Zara Tindall’s brother Peter Phillips on his marriage to wife Autumn.

He turned it down, but neither of his nieces will get the chance to do the same due to their gender.

The sisters currently hold the 19th and 20th places in the line of succession, and won’t take on any titles unless they marry a future duke, count or another dignitary.

They will remain relatively ordinary compared to the senior royals, but this is something the Queen seems to favour.

Speaking to Fabulous Digital, royal editor Ingrid Seward said she prefers them over the Cambridges as they are “normal”

She said: “They are certainly light relief. She can be herself around them and she does not care for the alleged feuding among William and Harry.

“That would make her very sad. But she would never interfere with their lives.”

The Queen allegedly prefers “ordinary people like Mike more than she does those that pander to her”, and the Tindalls seem to fit this description.

Ms Seward added the monarch likes to “down-to-earth” Mike.

She said: “That is why she gets on so well with her racehorse trainers.

“Mike is a down-to-earth Yorkshireman who makes her laugh and makes Zara very happy.

“I’m not sure if she has a similar sense of humour to Mike, but she does have a sense of the ridiculous which he seems to have too!”
