Woman dies after tree falls on car in high winds

A woman was killed in a car crash after a tree fell on her car in Dorset this morning.

Emergency services were called to reports of a collision on Verwood Road at 8.47am, and the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say the victim, who was driving a grey Ford B-Max,  was in her 60s and lived locally.

At the time of the incident heavy rain showers and high winds battered the area.

Verwood Road, near the A31, is closed while inspections are carried out.

Police Sergeant Lee Savage, of the traffic unit, said: ‘We have specially-trained officers supporting the family at this difficult time.

‘To assist with my investigation I am appealing to anyone who was travelling in the area at the relevant time and either witnessed the collision or captured any of the incident on dashcam to please contact Dorset Police.

‘I would like to thank motorists for their patience and understanding while the road closures are in place. These are absolutely necessary to allow emergency services to safely respond to the incident.’

Strong winds have caused disruption across Dorset and many other parts of the UK.

In Devon, Cornwall and Dorset there have been widespread reports of power cuts and trees brought down by the vicious winds.

A yellow weather warning in in place all weekend, with the Met Office warning of ‘danger to life flooding’ and the risk of flying debris.

Massive waves have been hitting coastal locations such as Sennen Cove.

People are being warned to stay away from the proms and breakwaters.
