Woman critical after 'man assaults her' following car crash

Police are investigating a report that the 39-year-old woman was assaulted by the male driver of the other car involved in the crash.

The Metropolitan Police said the woman, who had been driving a Kia Picanto, was “taken unwell” when officers arrived at the scene of the two-car collision at Gants Hill roundabout in Redbridge on Friday evening.

Officers – who were called just after 6.50pm – gave the woman first aid while they waited for an ambulance.

She was taken to an east London hospital where she remains in a critical condition.

A 54-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of assault and is in custody at an east London police station.

Detectives want to speak to a particular witness from the scene who is described as a white man around 6ft 2in tall.

The other car involved in the crash was a Toyota Yaris.
