UK Covid deaths soar to new heights as 1,820 are killed by virus

The UK has seen another record high number of Covid-19 deaths, with 1,820 reported in the latest 24 hour period.

The number of new cases has also gone up again by 38,905 after falling in each of the last four days. Overall, cases are still down by more than 80,000 in the last seven days.

There have now been 93,290 deaths since the pandemic began, according to the Government’s official death toll with 8,523 in the last seven days alone.

These figures only include people who died within 28 days of a positive test result. Separate figures show 101,880 have died and Covid-19 has been mentioned on their death certificate.

Both figures are up on yesterday when 33,355 new cases and 1,610 new deaths were reported.

A further 1,027 people who tested positive for coronavirus have died in hospital in England, bringing the total number of confirmed deaths reported in hospitals to 63,322.

Patients were aged between 29 and 101. All except 49, aged between 37 and 99, had known underlying health conditions.

The deaths were between December 14 and January 19, with the majority being on or after January 12.

In Northern Ireland there were 905 new cases and 22 new deaths reported. Scotland saw 1,656 new cases and 92 new deaths while Wales reported 1,283 new cases and 44 more deaths.

Meanwhile, 4,609,740 first doses of the Covid-19 vaccine have now been administered in England. This is an increase of 343,163 doses in the latest 24hr period.

It comes as plans to test school pupils for the virus have been paused because of the new highly transmissible variant of the bug.

In a statement today, Public Health England said it is no longer clear whether the risk of exposing pupils through daily contact testing is worth the benefits.
