Prince Philip transferred back to King Edward VII Hospital

The Prince is currently resting in hospital following a successful heart procedure on Thursday. He is expected to remain in hospital for several more days whilst he recuperates.

The Duke of Edinburgh has now spent 17 consecutive nights in hospital.

Video posted on Twitter, which carries the BBC Scotland imprint, shows coverage of the Salmond inquiry being interrupted by historic footage of Prince Philip on Wednesday.

Liberal Democrat MSP Alex Cole-Hamilton was replaced first by grainy black-and-white footage of the Duke, and then by a completely black screen.

At the end of the two minute 20 second clip a message from BBC Scotland appears stating: “We apologise for the break in this programme and are working to correct the fault.”

On Wednesday Nicola Sturgeon appeared before the Salmond inquiry to be quizzed on her how her government handled complaints against her predecessor.

A number of Twitter users suggested the BBC may have accidentally interrupted its coverage of the inquiry with part of a pre-prepared obituary video for the Duke of Edinburgh.

One tweeted: “Did someone press the emergency Prince Philip obituary button during the Salmond inquiry?”

Another added: “Did the Salmond inquiry cut to 1930s clips for anyone else or just me?

“The clip seems to be Prince Philip’s obituary.”

A third commented: “We had a bit of Prince Philip’s obituary on BBC Scotland.

“The inquiry broke off and went into B/W [black and white] footage of the auld yin [elderly person].”

A BBC spokesperson told Express.co.uk: “During the committee hearing we experienced a technical fault which resulted in a break in transmission for a short time.

“The fault was quickly rectified and service was resumed. We apologise for any inconvenience.”

Prince Philip is currently recovering at the King Edward VII hospital following surgery at St Bartholomew Hospital, both in London.

The Palace said in a statement: “Following the Duke of Edinburgh’s successful procedure at St Bartholomew’s Hospital on Wednesday, His Royal Highness has been transferred to King Edward VII’s Hospital this morning.

“The Duke is expected to remain in hospital for continuing treatment for a number of days.”

He is reported to have been suffering from an infection and pre-existing heart condition, neither of which are coronavirus related.

The Duke, who married the future Queen in 1948, turns 100 in three months’ time.

On Sunday CBS is due to broadcast an eagerly anticipated interview of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex by Oprah Winfrey.

This will be repeated the following day in the UK on ITV.
