Travellers park 50 caravans at Brighton seafront

Around 50 caravans and motorhomes arrived on a seaside promenade yesterday, drawing condemnation from locals and tourists.

The suspected Traveller camp on Hove Lawns, Sussex, has been described as an eyesore, with pictures showing litter strewn around the caravans.

The caravans were reported to have descended on to the site after midday.

Hove Lawns is classified as a protected stretch of land, which prohibits anybody from camping there for more than 12 hours.

One witness told MailOnline: ‘I saw them arriving at 1pm, there were loads of them. There were tents there before, but this escalated quickly.

‘They weren’t there when I woke up this morning. There must have been 50 or 60 vans, it was ridiculous.’

Councillor Dawn Barnett told the Argus: ‘The council should have removed the tents. It has opened the floodgates to everybody else.

‘It is a public space.

‘If I were to go and park my car at Preston Park or Queens Park or anywhere else, I guarantee it would be moved within 12 hours.’
