Storm Dennis tragedy: Man dies after falling into raging river in Wales

The man’s body was recovered from a river near Trebanos in the Swansea Valley. Police confirmed the man’s body had been pulled from the River Tawe after reports of someone falling in around 10am on Sunday near the town of Ystradgynlais.

The man’s identity has not been confirmed at this time.

A tweet from the Ystradgynlais neighbourhood policing team at Dyfed Powys Police, said: “A male has fallen into the river at Ystradgynlais at approximately 10am this morning and has sadly been found deceased further along the river in the Tebanos area.

“If you witnessed this incident please can you give us a call on 101.”

The tragedy comes as police have warned of a “major incident” in the region due to the severe flooding from Storm Dennis.

Riverbanks across the region have burst due to the heavy flooding from the storm overnight.

Such is the situation, the Met Office has issued a red weather warning.

Red weather warnings are only issued when conditions are at their highest level of impact.

Police have also reported they are dealing with “multiple” floods and landslides across south Wales.

Emergency centres have been set up in Merthyr Tydfil and Aberfan while certain villages have also been evacuated.

South Wales Police said in a statement: “Due to this morning’s flooding and severe disruption which have occurred overnight and through the course of the morning, a major incident has been declared and we are co-ordinating a multi-agency response.”
