Storm Dennis: ‘MAJOR INCIDENT’ declared in Herefordshire- ‘Don’t put yourself at risk’

A major incident has been declared in Herefordshire as the county experiences significant and widespread flooding from rising river levels and deep surface flooding. There are four major flood warnings in place for Eardiston and Tenbury Wells in Worcestershire, Little Hereford in Herefordshire, Ashford Carbonell and Ludlow in Shropshire, and Burford in Oxfordshire. Emergency response partners including Herefordshire Council, West Mercia Police, Herefordshire and Worcestershire Fire and Rescue, Environment Agency and health partners are working to support residents and protect the most vulnerable.

Residents of the area are advised not to put themselves at unnecessary risk, to avoid any unnecessary travel and do not enter flood water.

People are tasked with checking in on neighbours, especially if they are elderly or vulnerable.

Efforts are being upscaled to ensure vulnerable residents are evacuated where needed and rest centres are being set up for any residents that need to be evacuated at Hereford city, Holmer Leisure Centre, Holmer Road, Hereford, Point4, Venns Lane, Hereford.

Hundreds of homes have been evacuated across the UK as Storm Dennis batters households.

A rare red weather warning, the highest alert level, has been issued by the Met Office.

Homes have been evacuated after the River Taff burst its banks, and forecasters warned locals could face several days of misery.

A further five amber and four yellow warnings are in place, with the whole of the UK affected.

Forecaster Greg Dewhurst said: “It’s quite an extreme move but we have seen widespread falls across the whole region.” 

Severe flood warning were issued for the Scottish Borders and for the River Neath in South Wales.

Train and road travel are likely to be hit by the heavy rain and winds today.

Storm Dennis is set to batter Britain with Met Office weather warnings for wind and rain covering virtually whole country.

Britons are warned of travel chaos, gas and electricity outage as well as severe flooding that could leave some cut off for days.

The Met Office had earlier taken the rare step of issuing a red weather warning for South Wales.

They said that lives were being endangered by the extreme conditions.

South Wales Police said some communities have been cut off, with a number of rescues being carried out.

In a statement the force said: “Due to this morning’s flooding and severe weather related incident which have occurred overnight and through the course of the morning, a major incident was declared and South Wales Police is coordinating a multi-agency response.
