Sophie, Countess of Wessex, 55, is married to Queen Elizabeth II’s youngest child Prince Edward, 56, and is said to be the Queen’s ‘favourite’ daughter-in-law. The hardworking Countess has been dubbed the Royal Family’s ‘secret weapon’ for her tireless yet low key dedication to her role.

On Wednesday, Sophie carried out two royal engagements both of which were plugged on the Royal Family’s official Twitter account.

Sophie and Prince Edward do not have their own official social media accounts but their royal work is often promoted by the Queen’s Royal Family page.

On Wednesday the Royal Family account tweeted about the Countess of Wessex four times.

The first two tweets were to promote a visit Sophie paid to a school in Surrey to mark World Teachers Day 2020.

The Royal Family account tweeted two photos of Sophie carrying out the visit.

The first tweet showed a photo of Sophie chatting to students outdoors.

The tweet read: “The Countess of Wessex visited Stepping Stones School in Surrey yesterday to join staff and students as they celebrated #WorldTeachersDay2020.

“HRH with students learning outside in the Forest School.”

The tweet added: “The Countess spoke to students about what makes their teachers and staff so special to them and thanked the teachers for their commitment and hard work.

“HRH also learnt about the measures which are in place across the school to enabled a safe reopening after lockdown.”

The second tweet showed Sophie with staff in the school’s art department.

The tweet read: “The Countess spoke to students about what makes their teachers and staff so special to them and thanked the teachers for their commitment and hard work.”

The tweet added: “HRH also learnt about the measures which are in place across the school to enabled a safe reopening after lockdown.”

The Countess of Wessex focuses much of her royal work on empowering disadvantaged women across the globe.

Sophie carried out a second virtual engagement on Tuesday with charity Wilton Park which “convenes discreet dialogue on the world’s vital issues.”

The organisation brings people together online, in the UK and overseas to discuss pressing issues.

Yesterday the discussion was on a topic close to Sophie’s heart – the vital role women play in the prevention and resolution of conflicts, peace negotiations and peacebuilding in the Arab world.

Earlier this year, Sophie became the first-ever Royal Family member to visit South Sudan where she oversaw the work being done to tackle rape and gender-based violence in the war-torn country.

The Royal Family Twitter account promoted Sophie’s participation in the conference with Wilton Park yesterday with two powerful messages, including an inspirational quote for the Countess.

The first read: “The Countess of Wessex joined a virtual

@WiltonPark conference today on the vital role women play in the prevention and resolution of conflicts, peace negotiations and peacebuilding in the Arab world.”

The second tweet said: “’There are many absolutely incredible women working from the grassroots up, whose life experiences, as well as their capabilities, more than qualify them for a voice at the table.

“‘Many are unheard heroines that keep peace within and across communities.’ The Countess of Wessex.”

Prince Edward is the only one of the Queen’s children not to have divorced which is said to be a key reason why she has a soft spot for Sophie.

Speaking on the Queen’s fondness for her daughter-in-law, royal biographer and expert Robert Jobson said: “[The Countess] is probably the best example of an outsider coming into the family and learning on the job.

“She’s very much the Queen’s favourite, and you’ll notice that whenever there is a family holiday or gathering, Sophie and Edward often stay a while longer than the rest.”
