Sophie Wessex is visiting the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Buckingham Palace has announced. The Countess is the first member of the Royal Family to travel to the African nation.

Sophie’s visit will focus on the impact of sexual and gender-based violence in conflict, a cause close to her heart.

The trip is at the request of the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.

Sophie will be joined by Foreign Office Minister Lord Ahmad, who is the Prime Minister’s Special Representative on Preventing Sexual Violence in Conflict.

It is understood the visit has been planned for months.

The trip comes ahead of the International Preventing Sexual Violence in Conflict Initiative Conference being hosted by the UK Government in London in November, which Sophie is attending.
