Smart toddler, 2 unlocks mobile and calls help for collapsed mum

Sophia Mizen, two, sprung into action when Samantha, 28, collapsed from gastroenteritis.

As she fell she hit her head and was knocked out. Sophia thought her mother, an NHS nurse, was playing and jumped on her back.

But when she realised there was something wrong she grabbed her mum’s mobile.

The toddler, who turns three in April, placed the phone’s fingerprint sensor under her mum’s hand and managed to unlock it.

Sophia opened the Facebook messenger app before clicking on her grandmother’s face to video call her as the family, who live in Poole, Dorset, often do.

Debbie Baker, who was 160 miles away in Herefordshire, answered. Sophia said her mum was ‘poorly’ and Debbie asked her to show her. When she pointed the camera at her mum lying face down in the kitchen, Debbie, 50, rang 999.

Sophia and her brother Ethan, four, who had been hysterical at seeing his mum in the lifeless state, fetched a blanket and pillow to keep her warm.

Their brother Finley, one, was also in the house. A relative who lives nearby was alerted and arrived to look after the kids as they waited for the ambulance.

It is thought the children were alone with their unconscious mother for 45 minutes. Samantha has recovered and is back home where Sophia regularly checks up on her.

Samantha said: “I had spoken to Ethan about how to call for help in an emergency because he is the oldest and could take it in.

“I assumed Sophia was too young to understand but clearly she was listening. I didn’t realise how much she had soaked in. My phone has a sensor to unlock the phone with your fingerprint.

“But I didn’t know she knew how to unlock my phone and which app to use. She went on to Facebook messenger and clicked on her nan’s face.

“She was amazing and I dread to think what would have happened had she not unlocked it.

“My husband wasn’t due home for hours. Even when the paramedics arrived I was in and out of consciousness and couldn’t talk.

“Sophia has always been caring, she would cuddle me and ask me if I needed anything and she looks after her baby brother Finley.”
