These adorable Labrador puppies were found dumped at the side of the road, crammed inside a small crate with little room to move around.

Thankfully, the seven pooches, who were in a poor state, were rescued before their situation got worse.

The Fox Red Labradors were found on September 12 by Swale Borough Council Stray Dog Service in a lay-by on the A249 in Kent.

They are thought to be between 10 and 12 weeks old, reports Kent Live.

The puppies were described as being “skinny, smelly, and suffering from mange”, and none of them were microchipped.

Woodchips found in their stool also indicate that they had either a poor living environment, a poor diet, or both.

In stark contrast to the usual energetic and confident nature of puppies, these seven were all described as nervous, and were initially too frightened to move.

Now they have been recovered, have full bellies of food, been given cosy beds for sleep and are to be taken to the vets to work out a full treatment plan.

It is feared that such incidents are likely to become more common as a UK pet crisis continues, caused by the cost of living increases.

Numerous families simply do not have the funds to continue caring for a pet, meaning that abandonments like this are on the rise.

Commenting on the public Facebook post about this incident, Sally Langford said: “Absolutely heartbreaking. Hopefully they’ll get their forever homes.”

Similar sentiments were shared by Carrie-Anne Mattholie, who said: “So sad!!! Nasty people out there.”

Swale Borough Council Stray Dog Service said: “This is animal cruelty and outright neglect.

“These pups didn’t ask to be born and they certainly didn’t deserve to be dumped like rubbish.

“Sadly with the current pet crisis, we feel this is just the tip of the iceberg.”

Once the puppies have received the correct treatment, they are to be rehomed via the kennels or moved to a rescue.

Swale Borough Council Stray Dog Service will not be responding to rehoming enquiries for the time being.

Those with any information on who may have dumped the puppies are encouraged to call Swale Borough Council on 01795 417850.

Anyone looking to send any donations for the pups are encouraged to direct them to KareBear Kennels Day Care and Doggy Holidays.
