In August students were encouraged to return to school in Scotland after months of closures. Schools were closed earlier this year in response to the coronavirus pandemic, and for most students learning took place from home. Read on to find out when the school holiday dates are for 2020/21 in Scotland.

As coronavirus cases are on the rise across the UK, all nations are considering increased lockdown measures to deal with the increase.

This week Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon suggested a “circuit breaker” lockdown could be introduced, which would mean stricter lockdown measures are temporarily brought in.

Ms Sturgeon said: “A ‘circuit breaker’ could mean a lot of different things, so what we are looking at is what further restrictions may be necessary to get the virus back under control.”

There have been reports of stricter lockdown measures being introduced during the October half term, as this would minimise the impact of lockdown measures on education.

So far the Scottish government has not announced whether there will be a short-term lockdown later in October, and all options are currently still being considered.

But for those hoping for a trip away during the October half term, Ms Sturgeon has advised people against non-essential trips.

She said in September: “Please think of the October break as an opportunity to further limit social interaction.

“And, given that this is a global pandemic, please do not book travel overseas for the October break if it is not essential.”

When are the school holidays for Scotland?

Most pupils go back to school earlier in Scotland than the pupils in the rest of the UK.

This year the aim was for all students to be back to school by around August 18.

The next break for schools will take place in October 2020, however dates differ by each local authority.

After October, the next break for schools will be in December for the Christmas holidays.

When is the October half term in England?

The Government has not confirmed whether there will be stricter lockdown measures in England during the October half term.

However, if there were to be stronger lockdown measures at this time, in England and Wales half-term holidays are slightly later than they are for schools in Scotland.

For many schools the break will fall either from Monday, October 19 to Friday, October 23, or Monday, October 26 to Friday, October 30.
