Scottish man 'who faked death while facing sex charges' arrested in US

A man accused of faking his own death while facing charges of sexual assault has been arrested after he was reported missing in the US.

Kim Vincent Avis, also known as Kim Gordon and Ken Gordon-Avis, 55, was detained by the US Marshals Service in Colorado Springs, police said.

Monterey County Sheriff’s Office said he was reported missing earlier this year after reportedly going for a swim at Monastery Beach in Carmel, California.

It was initially feared Avis, a busker from Inverness, Scotland, died after going into the water at the beach which is notorious for drownings.

But investigators later discovered he was on bail for the alleged sex offences in his home country.

Police confirmed he was arrested in Colorado Springs, around 1,300 miles from where he was reported missing.

Avis now faces being extradited to Scotland to face the allegations against him.

In a statement, Police Scotland said: ‘Police Scotland is aware of reports from the USA regarding Kim Gordon or Avis and is liaising with the relevant authorities.’

The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office said: ‘Back in February, the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office received a report from Avis’s juvenile son that his father did not return from a swim at Monastery Beach.

‘Many resources were used, including a Coast Guard Helicopter, a Sheriff’s Office drone and our Dive Team to search for Avis with no success.

‘Over the next few months, deputies worked with The US Marshals Service, Interpol, and Scottish authorities to secure an arrest and extradition warrant for Avis.

‘Last week, US Marshals were able to track him to Colorado Springs due, in part, to a report in March that Avis was spotted in Monterey county driving a newer white ford van in the Big Sur area.’

An extradition hearing is expected to be held in Colorado later this month, police said.
