Royal takeover: How Sophie Wessex has entered Queen’s front line amid Megxit drama

As the weather warms and spring draws closer, the departure date for Megxit gets nearer and nearer. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are senior members of the Royal Family which means when they step down from their royal duties, other royals will have to step up to fill in the gaps created by their absence. But how is Sophie, Countess of Wessex, assisting the Queen in this tumultuous time?

Sophie, Countess of Wessex, is the wife of Prince Edward, the youngest child of the Queen and Prince Philip.

She is also the mother of the Queen’s youngest two grandchildren: Lady Louise Windsor and James Viscount Severn.

She has worked as a full-time member of the Royal Family for 18 years, having previously managed her own PR firm.

However, many royal experts have claimed Sophie is the perfect fit to step up to the Queen’s front line royal team as Prince Harry and Meghan leave two spots vacant.

In 2019, Sophie Countess of Wessex undertook 81 royal engagements according to the Court Circular.

However, according to royal expert, Tim O’Donovan she completed 236 engagements, making her the six hardest working royal.

So far this year, Sophie has been shown stepping up and filling the “Sussex-shaped holes” in the monarchy.

Prince William and Kate, Duchess of Cambridge hosted a glittering Buckingham Palace reception leaders from the African continent in January.

But they did not host alone and were in fact joined by co-hosts Prince Edward and Sophie.

Since Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced their royal exit in early January, Sophie, Countess of Wessex, has been pegged to “take over” Meghan’s role.

According to royal expert Phil Dampier, in the wake of Megxit, Sophie, Countess of Wessex, is the “perfect” person to take over some of the responsibilities which will be made available.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, Mr Dampier said: “With Harry and Meghan off the scene and Andrew taking a back seat because of the Epstein scandal, [the royal family is] becoming seriously under-staffed.

“Prince Philip is retired at 98, the Queen is nearly 94 and Charles and Camilla are in their 70s.”

Mr Dampier added: “Prince Edward has kept a very low profile in recent years but his wife, Sophie, has become a star in her own right.

“She is very close to Her Majesty and is a favourite of hers.

“Recently she has been on several overseas trips and done fantastically well.

“Now that her children are a bit older I think there could be a great role for her to play.”

Additionally, Sophie’s personal charitable causes have been making a more prominent presence on the Royal Family’s Twitter account.

Last week, Sophie appeared at a Duke of Edinburgh Award Women’s Network Forum event, where she met with young professional women and their mentors in London.

The Royal Family tweeted: “The forum brings together a cross-industry group of senior representatives from a variety of organisations and businesses to champion and promote gender balance and equality in the workplace.

“Girls from secondary schools across London shared their career aspirations with The Countess and their mentors, and discussed the steps they are taking to achieve their goals.”

Before this recent tweet, the last time the Royal Family shared photos of Sophie to Twitter was for her 50th birthday in 2015, and mentions of her have been few and far between since.

Sophie, despite being regarded as the Queen’s favourite female royal, has mainly remained in the background.

Instead, the Queen, Camilla Duchess of Cornwall, Kate and Meghan have served as the key female faces of the younger generation of royals, regularly appearing on the royal Twitter.
