Royal snub: How Kate was ‘in tears’ after Charlotte dress row before Meghan’s wedding

It is alleged that a rift began between the Cambridges and the Sussexes around this time, a fall-out that has only got worse since. Their relationship has now soured to the point that William, along with the rest of the Royal Family, had no idea that Harry and Meghan would announce this week that they were stepping down as senior royals. What makes matters worse between the brothers is that it was announced a day before Kate’s birthday.

A royal insider told Us Weekly: “It’s sad because when they were younger, William would have been the first person Harry would go to with news like this.

“William is incredibly hurt, but at the same time he has his own family to focus on and is trying to move forward with his life.”

Another source added: “Harry and Meghan rubbed salt into the wounds by making the huge announcement a day before Kate’s birthday. It hasn’t gone down well with William.”

However, back in May 2018 the royals were trying harder to be friendly, including having Charlotte as a bridesmaid for Meghan.

But according to The Telegraph’s Camilla Tominey, two sources told her that Meghan left Kate “in tears” at the dress fitting.

An insider told her: “Kate had only just given birth to Prince Louis and was feeling quite emotional.”

However in a rare move the Palace took the unusual step of speaking out to deny the claims, at the time saying: “This never happened.”

Meanwhile, a source told the Daily Mail that the sisters-in-law are “very different people” and “don’t really get on”.

They added that the Duchess of Sussex is “an acquired taste” and one that may not be to Kate’s liking.

Then, in the autumn it was announced that Harry and Meghan would be splitting from Kensington Palace and moving into Frogmore Cottage in Windsor.

Frogmore has become an issue of contention in the light of the recent news, as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex has £2.4million of renovations on the property using Crown funds – and are now stepping down from royal duties.

It has caused some to demand that they repay the money the money they took from the Sovereign Grant.

Graham Smith, chief executive of the campaign group Republic, claimed that the promise of financial independence rang hollow.

He said: “It’s not just Frogmore Cottage – they’re going to be relying on the Metropolitan Police to provide security.

“And they are going to be relying on their official title to cash in and make a profit on those official titles they hold.”

“I certainly think they owe the taxpayer a refund. They have spent £2.4million on refurbishing their house on the taxpayer.”

While William has not himself spoken out about Harry and Meghan’s announcement yesterday, the Royal Family have expressed that they are “disappointed” in the decision.

That said, one insider almost predicted this when discussing the tension between the Cambridges and Sussexes, as they emphasised Meghan’s independent spirit.

They said in November 2018: “[Meghan] is a woman who has lived life into her thirties in her way, she’s been a relatively successful actress, has her own humanitarian interests and her own circle of friends.

“She is very self-sufficient. Understanding the Palace way, the deference, the politics and the fact that there’s a pecking order, is taking a while for Meghan to get her head around.

“She is quite opinionated and Harry has got very dictatorial of late, which hasn’t made things easy at times.”

However, they insisted that there had been no big fall-out between Meghan and Kate.

They said: “While there are some tensions behind the scenes, Kate is pretty unflappable and nothing has become bad enough to make Harry and Meghan wanted to move out.

“People are genuinely pleased to see them so happy.”
