Royal SHOCK: Prince Philip in ‘tatty’ attire mistaken for gardener by Balmoral staff

Darren McGrady was the personal chef to Prince Philip, Queen Elizabeth II, Princess Diana, Prince William and Prince Harry during his 15 years in the royal kitchen. Mr McGrady told Delish that he did not recognise the Duke of Edinburgh the first time they met and instead assumed he was a gardener because of the green pullover he was wearing.

Mr McGrady said: “Prince Philip was the first member of the Royal Family I met.

“It was at Balmoral Castle, I had only been there a day.

“I was in the kitchen and I seemed to be on my own and this man walked into the kitchen, this elderly gentleman and he was in really tatty clothes.

“He had a green pullover on with the arms all hanging out and I looked at him and thought ‘oh it’s the gardener’.

“He said, ‘is the chef here please’ and I said, ‘I’ll get him for you’.

“I went into the kitchen and I said, ‘chef the gardener is here to see you’ and he said, ‘the gardener at this time of night?’

“So, we both scurried back through to the main kitchen and I was mortified when the chef said, ‘good evening your Royal Highness’.

“It suddenly dawned on me that it was Prince Philip.”

Prince Philip was the victim of a “crazy” rumour that trended worldwide last month according to a royal commentator.

ABC News royal contributor Omid Scobie told the Heir Podcast that the Duke of Edinburgh’s death was trending across the world because of Chinese whispers and false rumours.

Mr Scobie said: “Just speaking on Prince Philip there had been a rumour and we very rarely go into crazy internet talk.

“I had received so many text messages asking me about Prince Philip this week.

“A number of times on Twitter his death had trended across the world.

“I guess this shows you just how quickly Chinese whispers or false rumours can start like wildfire online.

“Because of course, he is alive and well.

“I have spoken with place aides who all assure me that he is in great health at the moment.”
