Royal POLL: Do you feel more reassured after the Queen’s coronavirus speech? VOTE HERE

This televised coronavirus address was only the fifth in her entire 68-year reign with the four other speeches including during the First Gulf War in 1991, after the death of Princess Diana in 1997, the death of the Queen Mother in 2002 and The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Celebrations in 2012.

The Queen’s coronavirus speech was watched by 23.5 million viewers in the UK, which is the second highest TV rating in more than ten years.

The 93-year-old told the country “we will succeed” in this fight and reminded us all that we will be reunited with family and friends again.

The monarch thanked people for following Government rules and coming together in its volunteer work.

Many people took to Twitter to say how much they loved it.

One social media user said: “You inspired a nation. Thank you.”

Sarah Ferguson said: “Her Majesty’s words touched my core and inspired us to never give up.”

Former Labour MP Kate Hoey said: “So proud to be British and to have Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth as our Head of State.

“Quite emotional watching her speech.”

She said: “I am speaking to you at what I know is an increasingly challenging time.

“A time of disruption in the life of our country: a disruption that has brought grief to some, financial difficulties to many, and enormous changes to the daily lives of us all.

“I want to thank everyone on the NHS front line, as well as care workers and those carrying out essential roles, who selflessly continue their day-to-day duties outside the home in support of us all.

“I am sure the nation will join me in assuring you that what you do is appreciated and every hour of your hard work brings us closer to a return to more normal times.

I also want to thank those of you who are staying at home, thereby helping to protect the vulnerable and sparing many families the pain already felt by those who have lost loved ones.

“That the attributes of self-discipline, of quiet good-humoured resolve and of fellow-feeling still characterise this country.

“The pride in who we are is not a part of our past, it defines our present and our future.”

Shortly after the speech, Mr Johnson was rushed off to hospital after testing positive for COVID-19 11 days ago.
