Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie are as close as royal sisters can be, supporting one another at royal events, with Beatrice chosen as Eugenie’s maid of honour for her wedding in 2018. The pair recently came together once more – albeit virtually – in a call with young people who are supported by the Teenage Cancer Trust.

The princesses have been long-standing honorary patrons of the Trust for years, inspired by their mother Sarah Ferguson who has worked with the charity since 1990.

During the call, Beatrice let slip a rather cute nickname for her younger sister.

Bea was starting the Zoom call and thanking participants for joining them when she called Eugenie a shortened version of her name – “Eug”.

Starting the call, Beatrice said: “It’s such an honour to be with everyone this afternoon and thank you so much for taking the time, and kind of taking the time out of your treatments just to have a little chat.

“You know Eug and I have been a part of the Teenage Cancer Trust family now for our entire lives.”

This is not the only nickname in the York household, with Sarah Ferguson often called Fergie and Princess Beatrice shortening her name to Bea.

Beatrice and Eugenie have been living apart during lockdown, with Eugenie staying at her parent’s home of Royal Lodge in Windsor, and Beatrice with her soon-to-be mother-in-law.

Beatrice has been staying with her fiancé Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi and his mother Nikki Shale at her country home in Chipping Norton.

However, the royal sisters are still working hard and took the time to chat with six young people about cancer and cancer treatment during lockdown.

Teenage Cancer Trust puts young people in the best possible place, physically, mentally and emotionally, for their cancer treatment and beyond, and during lockdown has been offering a wealth of activities to keep spirits up.

With many cancer patients having to shield themselves due to coronavirus, this means being unable to leave home or meet up with family and friends, and so Teenage Cancer Trust has turned 100 percent of its services online for those in need.

Events like quiz night, bingo and even a lads night in have been keeping young people connected during the sometimes frightening time of lockdown and cancer treatments.

The activities – organised by Teenage Cancer Trust Youth Support Co-ordinator Steve Harcourt – have been praised by those attending, with Eugenie even quipping she would love to have a game of bingo.

Speaking with Beatrice and Eugenie, Caitlin Wilde, 18, who has finished treatment but has ongoing complications related to a previous stem cell transplant said: “Steve’s been putting on online bingo and all sorts and to begin with I thought, I don’t want to do it, I thought it would be a bit cringe! But taking part has been a lot of fun.”

Jack Fielding, 25, from Bolton, added: “You actively look forward to these events as well. For me they’ve really been a lifeline.”

Speaking about the call Princess Eugenie said: “To hear from these young people was an honour and a privilege, and to hear how Teenage Cancer Trust has been adapting to support them online during this crisis is truly inspiring.

“This charity and the young people that it works with have created such a wonderful community.

“We loved hearing all about the fun activities young people have been doing over the past few months and hope to take part an online bingo session with them in the future!”

Later this month Beatrice and Eugenie will be hosting the Teenage Cancer Trust Awards 2020 – a virtual awards ceremony celebrating the incredible achievements of young people with cancer, and those who support them.

The sisters have been praised for their work with the Trust, with CEO Kate Collins – who also took part in the Zoom call – saying: “Their Royal Highnesses Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie are heartfelt and remarkable supporters of Teenage Cancer Trust – and young people with cancer.

“Their wholehearted commitment to supporting the vital work of charity makes the world of difference, and we feel honoured and deeply grateful that they are very much part of the Teenage Cancer Trust family.

“I can’t thank the young people who shared their experiences enough. Sadly, for them and others, this isn’t their first experience of shielding and the isolation this can bring. Young people facing cancer often feel isolated from their friends and peers, who are moving on with their lives.

“Put a global pandemic on top of that, and it is essential that Teenage Cancer Trust is able to work even harder to make sure young people don’t face cancer alone.”

The charity has launched an urgent fundraising appeal to raise £5 million to maintain its frontline services during the pandemic, you can donate today by clicking here.
