Princess Margaret was never jealous of the Queen but regretted not being given the same opportunities as her older sister, Lady Glenconner claimed. The former lady-in-waiting insisted Margaret “adored” Her Majesty and was very “supportive” of the Queen throughout her life. But speaking to Fox News, she admitted the princess did lament the separate education she received compared to her sister when they were younger.

Lady Glenconner said: “I think the only thing Princess Margaret would have wanted was to be educated better.

“The queen had people from Oxford and Cambridge come and teach her. Princess Margaret didn’t have that. She had a French governess and was taught piano.

“She was very intelligent and she valued education. So I think that’s the only thing she used to talk about – how she would have liked to have been as well-educated as the queen.

“But otherwise, there was no jealously at all.”

Princess Margaret and Princess Elizabeth saw their lives revolutionised when their uncle King Edward VIII decided to abdicate in favour of their father in 1936.

With the Duke of York becoming George VI, Elizabeth found herself first in line to the throne and in need of an education befitting the future monarch.

The young princess took up lessons in constitutional history from Eton vice-provost Henry Marten as well as religion from the Archbishop of Canterbury.

Margaret continued her lessons with a series of private governesses and her lessons were supervised by Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother.

Lady Glenconner said Margaret had wanted to “do her best” to support her father first and then her sister as they ruled over the country.

She continued: “She wanted to do her very best, which she did. It’s not fun to have all eyes on you and have the world watch your every move.

“But she didn’t complain about the life she was given. She simply wanted to do her work as smoothly as possible.

The former lady-in-waiting also took issue with reports describing Princess Margaret as a “party girl”, insisting the princess had both a “serious” and extroverted side.

She added: “There have been rumors about how difficult she was – rumors that I wanted to put to rest.

“Because she really was a wonderful friend. The press also depicted her as this party girl. I mean, she liked parties.

“She loved dancing, singing and music. But there was also a much more serious side to her that the press didn’t write about.

“Perhaps that story wasn’t as interesting. But I got fed up with those narratives because they didn’t really know my friend.”
