During Channel 5’s documentary ‘Meghan and Harry: The New Revelations’ royal expert Emily Andrews stated that Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s decision to announce publicly that they were stepping down from their royal roles went against the expectations of senior members in the Royal Family. The Royal Editor of the Mail on Sunday added that negotiations regarding the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s exit should have taken place behind closed doors so the Royal Family could present a united front.

Ms Andrews said: “At the time in January there was a lot of anger.

“As one very senior member of the house said to me don’t put a gun to the Queen’s head.

“You do not go public and say what you want, we sort it out behind closed doors.

“We all try and negotiate and then we present a united front.”

During the same documentary Russell Myers and Afua Adom discussed the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s departure from the Royal Family.

Ms Adom stated Queen Elizabeth II could not stand the idea of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry becoming more popular than the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

The documentary also analyses an extract from the book Finding Freedom – which the Duke and Duchess deny any involvement in – that states the Royal Family feared being eclipsed by Meghan Markle and Prince Harry.

Mr Myers said: “When they were told that they had to be brought into the confines of the Buckingham Palace machine I think that is when they realised their wings were being clipped and they weren’t going to realise the stardom that they had set themselves up to be.”

Ms Adom said: “I think they were particularly worried about William and Kate, that they might become more popular than them.

“I think they just couldn’t stand the idea of that.

“They couldn’t stand the idea of this young modern couple, half of which is African American potentially being more popular than William and Kate who were their golden couple.”

The Channel 5 documentary also referenced an extract from Finding Freedom which said: “There were concerns that the couple should be brought into the fold.
