Royal Family warned The Crown is going to get ‘much worse’ as new present-day series looms

The warning comes from royal biographer Hugo Vickers who told ITV This Morning hosts he believes the Netflix show should be completely cancelled. He said Royal Family members should expect the upcoming seasons of the show to be much worse. He said: “I think it’s going to get much worse as we get closer to the present day. My recommendation is that you sink the whole series.

“Do the same as you did to the work of another P. Morgan and put it into your ‘insinkerator’.”

The drama recently came in for criticism from the widow of a major killed in a Swiss ski resort, who said she was “very upset” to learn the disaster features in the latest series, after asking producers not to include it.

Major Hugh Lindsay, a friend of Prince Charles’ and a former Queen’s equerry, died in an avalanche at the Swiss resort of Klosters in 1988.

His widow Sarah Horsley said she was “horrified” when she was told the episode was going ahead and was concerned about the impact on her daughter.

Oliver Dowden, Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), praised the drama centred around the royal family as a “beautifully produced work of fiction”.

But he raised concerns that younger viewers might mistake fictional depictions for real-life happenings.

He told the Mail on Sunday: “It’s a beautifully produced work of fiction, so as with other TV productions, Netflix should be very clear at the beginning it is just that.

“Without this, I fear a generation of viewers who did not live through these events may mistake fiction for fact.”

He is expected to write to Netflix this week to express his view.

Mr Dowden’s remarks come after a similar suggestion from Earl Spencer, the brother of Diana, Princess of Wales.

He told ITV’s Lorraine: “I think it would help The Crown an enormous amount if, at the beginning of each episode, it stated that: ‘This isn’t true but it is based around some real events’.”

He added: “I worry people do think that this is gospel and that’s unfair.”

The Culture Secretary is reportedly going to write to Netflix to issue a formal request to add what some have labelled a “health warning” at the start of each episode.

It comes amid increasing concern from royal commentators that the hit show, created by Peter Morgan, will cause lasting damage on the Royal Family.

A friend of Prince Charles told The Mail on Sunday: “It is quite sinister the way that Morgan is clearly using light entertainment to drive a very overt republican agenda and people just don’t see it.“They have been lured in over the first few series until they can’t see how they are being manipulated.

“It is highly sophisticated propaganda. The fourth series of The Crown depicts Princess Diana’s eating disorder and Prince Charles’ alleged affair with Camilla Parker Bowles.

The series has already reportedly been watched by more viewers than Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s actual wedding.

Last week, 29 million people are said to have watched the drama series in the week after its release.

Emma Corrin, who plays Princess Diana in The Crown, admitted that the series is “fictionalised to a great extent”.

Speaking to the Tamron Hall Show, she said: “I think for everyone in The Crown we always try and remind everyone that what we are, the series that we’re in, is fictionalized to a great extent.

“Obviously it has its roots in reality and in some fact but Peter Morgan’s scripts are works of fiction.”

The Crown’s creator, writer Peter Morgan, has admitted some scenes from the show were “made up in my head”.

However he argued they reflect emotions that really existed within the family during this time and has defended his right to creative freedom.
