Royal Family tree: Who’s where in the line to the throne?

The Royal Family is an ancient institution which under common law saw the crown passed on by male primogeniture until this was changed in 2015 with the introduction of the Succession to the Crown Bill 2013. Express.co.uk has compiled a guide to show you who is where in the line to the throne.

The Queen is the current monarch of Great Britain, having ascended the throne in 1952 after her father’s death.

She is the longest-reigning British monarch in history, a title she was awarded in 2015 when she surpassed Queen Victoria’s record.

Queen Elizabeth II was the eldest daughter of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth.

Her father only ascended to the throne after his elder brother King Edward VIII abdicated, pushing her into the position of heir presumptive.

Prince Charles

Prince Charles is the new heir presumptive, meaning he is first in line to the throne.

The Prince of Wales, 71, is the oldest of the Queen and Prince Philip’s children.

He has been the longest-serving heir apparent in history and was named Duke of Cornwall and Duke of Rothesay in 1952.

Charles has spent the past seven days self-isolating in Scotland after testing positive for coronavirus and displaying mild symptoms.

A Palace official said the prince was in good health and was following the Government’s restrictions.

Prince William

Prince William is the eldest son of Prince Charles and his first wife, the late Princess Diana.

The Duke of Cambridge, 37, is second in line to the throne and will ascend the throne after his father.

William and his wife, Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, have three children together.

Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.

Prince William and Kate’s children are next in line to the throne.

George, 6, Charlotte, 4, and Louis, on1, are third, fourth and fifth in the line of succession respectively.

Historically, Louis would have been fourth in line to the throne ahead of his sister, however, the Queen and Commonwealth leaders agreed to change the succession laws in 2011 meaning both sons and daughters have an equal right to the throne.

Prince Harry and Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor

Prince Harry, Meghan Markle and their son Baby Archie are commemorating the official end of their time as senior royals today.

The couple is officially relinquishing all royal duties but the move does not change Harry or Archie’s line of succession.

Harry and Archie are sixth and seventh in the line of succession, even though the latter does not carry a title out of choice from his parents.

Prince Andrew, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie of York

Prince Andrew is the second eldest son of the Queen and Prince Philip and is eighth in line to the throne.

He stepped back from royal duties last year amid the controversy surrounding his friendship with the late convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein.

Andrew and Sarah Ferguson’s daughters Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie are ninth and tenth respectively.

Prince Edward, James Viscount Severn and Lady Louise Windsor

The Queen’s youngest son Prince Edward is 11th in line to the throne.

The Earl of Wessex has two children with his wife Sophie, Countess of Wessex: James, Viscount Severn and Lady Louise Windsor.

Although Lady Louise is the eldest child of the couple, the siblings were born before the laws of male primogeniture were disbanded, meaning James is 12th while Lady Louise is 13th in the line of succession.

Princess Anne and family

Princess Anne is the Queen and Prince Philip’s second-oldest child and only daughter.

Due to the rules of primogeniture, she and her children and grandchildren are behind all of the Queen’s son in the line of succession.

Anne is 14th in line to the throne followed by:

  • Peter Philips in 15th place
  • Savannah Phillips in 16th place
  • Isla Phillips in 17th place
  • Zara Tindall in 18th place
  • Mia Tindall in 19th place
  • Lena Tindall in 20th place.

You can find the British line of succession up to 100th place here.
