Royal bond: The tragic similarity Prince Harry and Doria Ragland share

Prince Harry, 35, was reunited with his wife Meghan Markle, 38, and their son Archie Harrison in Canada last week, where the family are expected to spend most of their time following their withdrawal from the royal spotlight. While Harry may be far away from his royal relatives, he and Meghan are now closer to Doria Ragland who lives in California.

According to insiders, Doria, 63, has played a guiding role throughout the Sussexes decision to step down as senior royals.

The LA-based yoga teacher is unwaveringly loyal to her daughter and son-in-law and is said to be a valued source of advice and support.

A former confidante of Doria told Mail Online: “Doria has a great warmth.

“She’s a brilliant cook and is very motherly, but she isn’t someone who seeks attention, and for Harry her discretion and silence mean the world.”

According to the source, Doria – like Harry – lost her mother at a young age and has become a “rock” to the Prince.

They added: “Harry, in particular, turns to her for advice”

“She is like the Queen – she never complains and never explains.

“Meghan has always trusted her completely but she has become a rock to Harry who, of course, lost his own mother so young.”

Prince Harry’s mother Princess Diana was killed in a car crash in 1997 when he was just 12-years-old.

Harry has opened up about how the tragic loss affects him to this day.

Speaking in an ITV documentary made during the Sussexes’ trip to Africa last autumn Prince Harry said: “My mum clearly taught me a certain set of values of which I will always try and uphold despite the role and the job that sometimes that entails if you know what I mean.

”But I think, I will always protect my family and now I have a family to protect.”

“So everything that she went through and what happened to her is incredibly raw every single day and that’s not me being paranoid that’s just me not wanting a repeat of the past.

“And if anybody else knew what I knew, be it a father, be it a husband, be it, anyone, you’d probably be doing exactly what I’m doing as well.”

In the same interview, Harry described his mum’s death as a “wound that festers” and said dealing with the pressure of his royal life and the grief over his mother’s death is something that takes “constant management.”

He added: “I thought I was out of the woods and then suddenly it all came back and I suddenly realised, no, actually this is something that I have to manage.

“Part of this job and part of any job, like everybody, means putting on a brave face and turning a cheek to a lot of the stuff but, again, for me and for my wife, of course, there’s a lot of stuff that hurts, especially when the majority of it is untrue.”

“But all we need to do is focus on being real and focus on being the people that we are and standing up for what we believe in.

”I will not be bullied into playing a game that killed my mum.”

Just three months later the couple announced they were stepping down from their senior royal roles and planned to split their time between the UK and Canada.

Ahead of returning to Canada last week, Prince Harry gave a moving speech about his decision, which also touched on his mother’s death.

He told a charity dinner in London: “I was born into this life, and it is a great honour to serve my country and the queen.

“When I lost my mum 23 years ago, you took me under your wing.

“You’ve looked out for me for so long, but the media is a powerful force, and my hope is one day our collective support for each other can be more powerful because this is so much bigger than just us.

Buckingham Palace made it clear it would not be possible for the Sussexes to have one foot in and one foot out of the monarchy.

While they hoped to remain working royals they will cease to officially represent the Queen from Spring 2020.

Harry is expected to return the UK for royal engagements on occasion but he will be mostly based in North America where he may come to rely on Doria Ragland’s support more than ever.
