The 1998 coin features an image of Santa Claus and the word “Christmas”. The 50p piece also comes with a festive card.

The coin was sold on eBay for £151.25 on September 30.

The 50p piece sparked a bidding war and attracted 24 bids.

The buyer also had to pay £6.85 for it to be posted by special delivery.

The coin was listed for 10 days and had a starting price of £1.

The 50p was minted in Gibraltar meaning it is not legal tender in the UK.

It was designed to be a commemorative piece and was not released into circulation, the Mirror reports.

The listing stated: “Rare Gibraltar 1998 Santa & Chimney Diamond Finish Christmas 50p In Card.

“Very hard to find in a Christmas card in great condition.

“Front of card is pristine.

“Please view photos of the back of the card.

“Small amount of toning in Queen’s hair.

“This does not detract from overall beauty of coin or card.
