The four “loyal, discreet and utterly trustworthy” women in the Queen’s inner circle have rallied around the monarch in her time of need, according to the Mail on Sunday. Those within the “gang of four” include Her Majesty’s daughter Princess Anne, daughter-in-law Sophie, Countess of Wessex. Also the Queen’s childhood friend Lady Pamela Hicks and Royal dresser Angela Kelly.

A Royal source told the Mail: “Sophie is like another daughter to the Queen, they are that close.

“She is trusted and relied on like few others.”

Prince Edward and the Countess of Wessex visited Her Majesty on Saturday at Windsor Castle.

A tearful Sophie said “the Queen has been amazing” as she and Edward drove away from the residence where Prince Philip died on Friday aged 99.

One onlooker told the publication: “She looked visibly upset and had obviously been crying.

“Someone shouted out ‘How is the Queen doing?’ as Edward and Sophie drove past.

“Sophie was very nice and her response brought home the fact that this is a family grieving deeply for someone they loved very much, as well as an institution mourning the loss of a key figure.”

Speaking about the “gang of four”, a Royal source explained how the women provide a “rare” support network for the Queen.

They said: “What they all share is utter devotion to Her Majesty.

“But also the ability to be honest with her – something which is rare in Royal households.”

The Duke of Edinburgh is the longest-serving royal consort in British history.

On Friday, a statement from the Palace spoke of Her Majesty’s “deep sorrow” to announce her husband’s death.

The Palace has since announced that Prince Philip’s funeral will take place on April 17 in St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle.

On the same day, a national minute’s silence is planned to be observed at 3pm when the funeral begins.
