Queen Meghan Markle! Labour leadership hopeful Lisa Nandy wants Sussexes on throne

Ms Nandy, one of the three candidates running to replace Jeremy Corbyn as leader of the Labour Party, made a shocking claim yesterday night. Appearing on a live TV debate broadcasted by Channel 4, Ms Nandy, Keir Starmer and Rebecca Long-Bailey were asked whether they would vote to keep or scrap the monarchy if the UK held a referendum on it in the near future.

Ms Nandy, MP for Wigan, was the only one to say she would scrap the institution of monarchy because she is “a democrat”.

However, after her fellow candidates gave their answers, Ms Nandy chimed in again, adding: “I’d quite like to see Queen Meghan at some point.”

The flippant remark gained the cheers and applause of members of the public in the studio.

However, it was met with mixed feelings by others watching the debate at home.

One, who appreciated the comment, wrote on Twitter: “Queen Meghan is right.

“She and Harry are a level above the rest.”

Another confessed the humorous comment pushed her towards supporting Ms Nandy.

They said: “Yessss @lisanandy Queen Meghan comment has my vote”.

Another, however, took the comment more seriously and pointed out how, in the reality of facts, Meghan would become Queen.

They said: “You do realise that this requires the death of William and all his children?

“Is this the kinder, gentler politics of a Communist regime?”

Another added: “Nope. “She was my favourite before this stupid statement. Not anymore.”

While Ms Nandy, who was one of the 72 female MPs who signed an open letter backing Meghan last year, showed her support to the Sussexes, Mr Starmer, MP for Holborn and St Pancras since 2015, suggested he likes the slimmed-down version of monarchy dreamed by Prince Charles.

Mr Starmer said, when asked about what he would vote for at a referendum on the monarchy: “No, I would not, I think I would downsize it.

“By the way, it didn’t come up on the doorsteps.

“We have been talking about why we lost the elections and what we need to do next, this is not a priority for the leader of the Labour Party.”

On the other hand, Ms Long-Bailey, MP for Salford and Eccles, simply dismissed the idea of holding a referendum.

She said: “I think we got more important things to worry about.

“I wouldn’t vote to abolish the monarchy.”

Meghan and Harry are currently living in Canada with their son Archie Harrison.

Following their bombshell statement where they announced their intention to step down as senior royals on January 8, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex thrashed out a deal with the Queen and other senior royals which granted them the right to live abroad, pursue private ventures and become financially independent.

In turn, the couple will have to relinquish the use of their title by the time they officially step down, in spring, and stop carry out royal duties.

In March, the pair are expected to return to the UK to carry out their last engagements, including attending the Commonwealth Ceremony at Westminster Abbey.
