Queen Elizabeth II, 94, and Prince Philip, 99, have been spending the second lockdown at Windsor Castle and like most Britons are yet to confirm their Christmas plans. While Royal Family members traditionally join the couple en masse for a festive gathering at Sandringham, the usual get together is off the cards amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Who could be in the Queen and Prince Philip’s bubble?

Earlier this week the Government confirmed COVID-19 restrictions would be relaxed over a five-day period at Christmas allowing Britons to spend the holidays with more than just their own household.

From December 23 to 27, three households can mix but the bubble must be exclusive over this period, meaning people cannot shift from one group to another.

The Queen and Prince Philip could choose to bubble up with two other households for Christmas but it remains to be seen which royals might be included in their bubble.

The Queen’s eldest son Prince Charles could join them with Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall but the Duchess may wish to spend the festive period with her children and grandchildren.

Princess Anne and her husband Timothy Laurence are another possible option.

However, the Princess Royal lives in Gloucestershire close to her two children Zara Tindall and Peter Phillips.

Anne may wish to take advantage of the loosening of restrictions to enjoy Christmas Day with her children and grandchildren all under one roof.

Perhaps the most plausible guests for the Queen and Philip are their youngest son Prince Edward and his wife Sophie Wessex.

Edward and Sophie have two children – Lady Louise Windsor, 16, and James Viscount Severn, 12, and are said to be favourites of the Queen.

Prince William and Kate, Duchess of Cambridge could choose to spend Christmas down the road from the Queen and Philip and their country home Anmer Hall.

William and Kate have three children – Prince George, seven, Princess Charlotte, five and Prince Louis, two.

While Kate and William usually spend Christmas with the royals at Sandringham this year they could choose to spend it with Kate’s parents Carole and Michael Middleton.

The Queen’s second son Prince Andrew might also receive an invite from his parents but given his daughter, Princess Eugenie is currently expecting her first baby, the Yorks may wish to spend Christmas together as a family at the Royal Lodge in Windsor.

Who usually attends Sandringham?

Christmas at Sandringham is usually attended by extended Royal Family members.

Last year the Prince of Wales, the Duchess of Cornwall, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, the Duke of York, Princess Beatrice and her then-fiance Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, the Princess Royal and the Earl and Countess of Wessex were among guests.

The Royal Family usually attend church together in Kings Lynn on Christmas Day but this ritual is also a write off this year.

While Philip and the Queen have been celebrating Christmas at Sandringham for decades, this year they may mark the holiday at Windsor Castle.

The royal pair have spent both lockdowns at Windsor where they are looked after by a select team of staff referred to as “HMS Bubble.”
