Queen Elizabeth II, 94, posed beside her husband Prince Philip, 98, for a special new portrait to mark the Duke of Edinburgh’s 99th birthday on June 10. In the photo, the Queen wears a floral Angela Kelly dress paired with one of her favourite pieces of jewellery – the Cullinan V brooch.

The hidden meaning behind the Queen’s brooch

The Cullinan V brooch is a heart-shaped piece encrusted with diamonds and has a fascinating history.

The brooch is one of several pieces of royal jewellery to feature one of a number of stones cut from the famous 3,106-carat Cullinan – the largest diamond ever found.

The original Cullinan stone was mined in South Africa and given to King Edward VII in 1907 by the government of the Transvaal.

The Crown Jewels also feature pieces cut from the original Cullinan.

The Cullinan V previously belonged to the Queen’s grandmother Queen Mary and was worn as part of the suite of jewellery made for the Delhi Durbar in 1911.

The Queen has worn the beloved brooch on multiple occasions during her 68-year reign.
