Princess Beatrice title: Why Bea now holds the same title as Sophie Wessex

Senior members of the Royal Family are often given new royal titles on their wedding days. Princess Beatrice is the latest royal to walk down the aisle, having married her beau Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi back in July in a secret wedding. However as Beatrice is not a senior royal, she and Edoardo did not receive new royal titles on their wedding day from the Queen.

Princess Beatrice does not work on behalf of the Royal Family, and she and her sister Princess Eugenie are free to pursue their own careers and income.

As the daughter of Prince Andrew, who is the Queen’s second son, Beatrice was entitled to the style of Princess upon her birth.

Now she is married, Beatrice will keep her HRH status and her Princess title.

But unlike royals such as Prince William and Prince Harry, Beatrice did not receive a new royal title on her wedding day from the Queen.

However, she did receive a new form of title, as her husband Edoardo actually holds an Italian courtesy title.

Edoardo is a Count, which makes Princess Beatrice a Countess through marriage.

Any of Beatrice’s future children with Edoardo will also bear titles as well.

Edoardo’s father Alessandro Mapelli Mozzi told The Mail on Sunday: “Edoardo is the only male descendent taking the family into the next generation.

“He is a Count – his wife will be a Countess automatically and any of their children will be counts or nobile donna.”

The Italian nobility is no longer officially recognised, so the titles Edoardo and Beatrice hold are courtesy titles.

But Beatrice’s title is now similar to the title held by Sophie, Countess of Wessex, who is married to the Queen’s youngest son Prince Edward.

Beatrice’s title is Italian so she is actually technically a Contessa, but this is equivalent to the British title of Countess.

But the major difference between the two women’s titles is that only Sophie’s was given by the Queen.

Prince Edward was given the title of Earl of Wessex when he married Sophie Rhys-Jones in 1999.

The title caused some confusion at the time, as it is unusual for the son of a monarch not to receive a Dukedom on their wedding days.

However, it is believed Edward actually opted for the title of Earl himself.

According to reports, Edward liked the character of Lord Wessex in the film Shakespeare in Love, and as only an Earldom for Wessex was available he decided on the lower-ranking title.

Subsequently, when Edward became an Earl his new wife Sophie became the Countess of Wessex.

However in the future, the couple are likely to become the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, as it is believed Edward will receive the Dukedom when his father Prince Philip dies.

Edward now plays a key role in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, which was founded and run by his father before his retirement from public duties in 2017.

A royal source told The Times in 2015: “The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is very much Prince Edward’s thing.

“That is a big part of what he does now because he will be the next Duke of Edinburgh.”
