Prince William shock: Expert thought prince ‘didn’t want to be a member of Royal Family’

Royal photographer Arthur Edwards spent years alongside Prince Charles and Princess Diana and was even there on the day Diana emerged with her newborn son William on the steps of the Lindo Wing. After witnessing the actions of the family first hand for years, Mr Edwards sensed Prince William’s uncomfortable nature. His comment reflected what the prince has previously said: that he just wants to be “normal”.

Speaking on ‘Prince William at Thirty’, uploaded to YouTube in June 2012, he said: “I thought William didn’t even want to be a member of the Royal Family.

“In fact, I distinctly got the impression that he hated anything to do with the attention and the intrusion.

“But, now I know he’s just perfect for this job.”

Mr Edwards’ confidence in the prince’s abilities was echoed by other royal experts and speakers on the programme.

Royal expert Katie Nicholl said: “He’s probably everything we could possibly ask for in a prince and future king.”

Meanwhile, former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond said: “I think William and Kate have seen and steered the monarchy and the Royal Family into much calmer waters.”

She was referring to the turbulent years of William’s childhood when Princess Diana and Prince Charles were at odds.

The Queen publicly referred to 1992 as “a terrible year” – referring to Charles and Diana’s relationship, as well as the break-up of Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson and the fire at Windsor Castle.

Charles and Diana’s marriage broke down in the most public way, especially after Princess’ very candid interview with BBC Panorama’s Martin Bashir in 1995.

Then, Diana tragically died in a car crash in Paris in 1997, piling tremendous grief on top of everything else.

William and his wife Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, has brought a sense of stability to the Royal Family.

However, being the model prince was not easy for William, as he confided in a friend when he was on his gap year.

He told fellow Raleigh International volunteer Sacha Hashim: “I wish I could be normal”, according to The Scotsman.

In an interview at the time, he said: “I don’t like being treated any different at all. I don’t like special treatment at all.

“Which is why I think I get along with these guys so well as well.”

This attitude may have been passed down from his mother, who apparently tried to bring up her sons William and Harry “as normal as possible”.

Of course, William has had no choice in his future as King.

Philip Schofield told the documentary: “I think Diana would be thrilled.

“She knew when she gave birth what his destiny was and I think that perhaps if she looked at the way he’s played it – the wife he has, the life they’ve got – she’d probably think ‘Yeah, that’s pretty cool’.”
