Prince Philip threatened future of Royal Family after ‘political-dynamite’ row with Queen

Prince Philip: Experts recall ‘political dynamite’ assumption

Prince Philip was left “grated” by the decision that the Queen and their future children would take the name Windsor rather than Mountbatten. During Chanel 5’s documentary, ‘Prince Philip: The Bachelor Years’ royal commentators reflected on the political implications and tension surrounding the Queen’s last name. Narrator Graham Seed said: “The success of the coronation, both on the world stage and for Philip personally comes off the back of a body blow for the man in the support role.

“Prince Philips assumption that the family will adopt his surname was political dynamite.”

Ms Bond said: “I suppose Philip had to swallow an awful lot as a proud male and a royal male.

“One thing that really grated with him was the fact that he was not allowed to give his name to his children, Mountbatten.”

Royal historian, Dr Kate Williams added: “He absolutely expected that Elizabeth would take his name on marriage.

“He thought the children would take his name so therefore it would be the house of Mountbatten.”

Royal author Philip Eade reflected on the political significance of the Queen not taking Prince Philips last name.

He said: “Various people, most importantly Churchill was dead set against this idea.

“They were determined that the name should remain Windsor.”

Ms Bond added: “There was a big row about it but Philip lost the argument.

“The Queen decreed that her children, Charles and Ann would be Windsors.”

Prince Philip’s frustration at not passing on his name has long been documented by royal experts and commentators

Ingrid Seward’s book, ‘My Husband and I: The Inside Story of 70 years of the Royal Marriage’ highlighted this anger from Prince Philip.

The book argued that at the time Prince Philip had said: “I am the only man in the country not allowed to give his name to his children.

“I’m nothing but a bloody amoeba.”

Despite this initial frustration the Queen and Prince Philip have remained married for over seven decades and have portrayed an image of unity throughout the world.

And after years of the debate, the Duke of Edinburgh even managed to secure a small victory before the birth of his younger sons on 1960s.

After another round of talks with Her Majesty and the Government, Philip ensured male-line descendants would be able to use the new surname Mountbatten-Windsor on official documents.
