The Duke of Edinburgh was admitted to hospital last week, as what Buckingham Palace called a “precautionary measure”. He became unwell at Windsor Castle, and was transported to King Edward VII’s hospital in London for “observation”. But he has stayed there for nearly a week, and the Palace has confirmed he will remain there for a while longer.

How long will Prince Philip be in hospital?

The Prince’s recent stay at King Edward VII’s hospital will see him under observation for a little while longer.

In a statement, Buckingham Palace said he was “responding well” to treatment but needed more time at the hospital.

The statement read: “The Duke of Edinburgh remains at King Edward VII’s hospital where he is receiving medical attention for an infection.”

“He is comfortable and responding to treatment but is not expected to leave hospital for several days.”

The Palace did not disclose any further details, but the Prince’s family members have given some insight.

In an interview with Sky News earlier today, Prince Edward, the Earl of Wessex, spoke about his father’s hospital stay.

The Duke’s youngest son said they had spoken over the phone and that he was feeling “much better”.

He added he was “looking forward to getting out, which is the most positive thing.

The Prince said he was keeping his “fingers crossed”, but the Duke was becoming “just a bit” frustrated.

He said: “I think that gets to all of us, and then, you can only watch the clock so many times and the walls are only so interesting.

“We’ve had some brilliant and lovely messages from all sorts of people and we really appreciate that and so does he, I’ve been passing them on.”

Prince Charles paid his father a brief visit in person over the weekend when he stopped by the hospital for 30 minutes.

He appeared wearing a mask at roughly 3.20pm on Saturday and left after 4pm.

Prince Philip, now 99, has had routine visits to King Edward VII’s hospital in the past to treat infections.

His last visit there was in December 2019, once again as a precautionary measure.

Buckingham Palace was tight-lipped on why, stating he was receiving treatment for a “pre-existing condition”.

They added in a statement: “The admission is a precautionary measure, on the advice of His Royal Highness’s doctor.”

His stay lasted for four days, and he left in time to return to Windsor for Christmas Eve.

He was also previously admitted to the hospital in 2012, 2017 and 2018.
