Prince Harry, 37, and wife Meghan Markle, 40, were browsing for their very own Christmas tree last year when a young boy mistook the Duke of Sussex for a store salesman. Reports suggest the couple had been allowed to visit the store while it was presumed to be empty.

However, one family was reported to still be inside.

The store, believed to be Big Wave Dave’s Christmas Trees & Pumpkin Patch, is only around eight miles from the Sussexes’ £11million Montecito home.

Shop salesman James Almaguer claimed an excited child still inside approached the Duke of Sussex to ask “if he worked here”.

Posting on Twitter, Mr Almaguer added: “Megan and Prince Harry came into my work today and we sold them their Christmas tree.

“It was anticlimactic, but a very, very interesting experience.

“There was one family in there and their stoked little son ran through trees up to Harry and asked if he worked here not knowing who that is.

“They seemed like very nice people, honestly.

“Meghan sounds very kind and Harry sounded and acted like a chill lad honestly.

“I’m really glad they liked our trees. We got the best we could get. Very appreciative.”

While many people around the world will be putting their Christmas trees up during the countdown to December 25, the tradition has long been associated with blue-blooded Britons.

It had been thought Queen Victoria and her German-born husband Prince Albert popularised decorating Christmas trees in the UK.

However, King George III and his German wife Princess Charlotte are now believed to be the first to have imported the fir tree festive custom from the continent back in the 1790s.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are expected to stay in California for Christmas rather than join members of the Royal Family at Sandringham for this year’s festive celebrations.

A source told Page Six: “There’s a lot that goes into the logistics and the planning of the family Christmas, so of course, staff know that Harry and Meghan are not coming.

“If they were, they would have communicated it to their family by now.

“But this is Her Majesty’s first Christmas without her husband, so one would have hoped they would want to be with her.”

Following Page Six’s report in November, Express.co.uk reached out to the Sussexes’ press team for comment.
