Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have signed a deal with Netflix to produce films and series for the streaming platform, including scripted series, docu-series, documentaries, features and children’s programming. It comes after the Duke and Duchess announced that they were stepping back as senior royals earlier this year. Vanity Fair’s Royal Correspondent, Katie Nicholl told BBC Breakfast that the new deal would be very welcome, especially since the couple’s other venture fell through.

She said: “I don’t think it was any great secret that when they moved to California, this was going to be a genre they dipped their toes into.

“The simple fact is that after stepping down from the Royal Family, they had to find a way to make money.

“One of the plans which had been public speaking is now very much on hold because, of course, in this global pandemic they can’t be doing that.

“TV production is really very much the new direction that they planned to be going in.”

Ms Nicholl continued: “The Netflix deal isn’t a surprise but certainly a source of great happiness and excitement for the couple.

“To say that this is the opportunity that they’ve been waiting for is an understatement.”

Th Sussexes have signed with the Harry Walker Agency, which dubs itself the world’s leading speaking agency.

The business’ impressive client list includes the Obamas, the Clintons and Serena Williams.

The Duke and Duchess have maintained that they will not be speaking about the Royal Family.

The pandemic also forced the royals to put a pause on officially launching their new philanthropic foundation, Archewell.

The royal commentator added that fans could expect programming about topics such as environmentalism and civil rights.

She also pointed to the Black Lives Matter campaign, which the Sussexes have closely affiliated themselves with.

Netflix are reported to have signed a deal worth between £100 and £150 million just to sign the couple up.

The royal commentator stressed that their work needs to be “in keeping with that respectful tone to the monarchy”.

Ms Nicholl also addressed a rumour that there may also be a deal with Spotify in the works.

She noted that Harry is a “big music fan”, and told the BBC to “rule out nothing” with the Sussexes.
