Princess Diana was “concerned” over her husband Prince Charles’ attitude towards parenting after observing the “stiff upper lip” childhood he had experienced growing up in the Royal Family. From the offset, the Princess of Wales insisted on breaking royal tradition by taking a more active role in the lives of the couple’s two children, Prince William and Prince Harry.

Royal expert Deborah Thomas told 9Honey: “How she would have perceived Charles’ upbringing would have had her concerned.

“She would have seen with Charles, him not wanting to talk about relationships and love, how stiff upper lip the Royal Family were and she did not want that for her own family.”

Prince Charles has described his parents as “emotionally distant” in his authorised biography by Jonathan Dimbleby.

The Queen is known for remaining emotionally guarded in public and very rarely offers public displays of affection.

Princess Diana also described her childhood as “unhappy” and wanted to ensure that her children grew up in a loving household with active parents.

Expert Deborah Thomas said: “She said that she had a very unhappy childhood and she watched her parents’ marriage disintegrate. She watched her mother leave the home, her father getting custody, being separated from her mother.”

“She had a stepmother that she didn’t relate to and she didn’t want that for her own children. She wanted to be a hands-on mother.”

Princess Diana’s parents divorced when she was seven years old after her mother abruptly left for another man. The couple fought a bitter custody battle over their four children which her father eventually won.

Her love for children was evident before she gave birth, as she worked in a nursery with young children before she met the Prince of Wales.

After marrying Prince Charles in 1981, the couple welcomed Prince William in 1982 and Prince Harry in 1984.

Diana insisted on breaking royal protocol by bringing the infant William on the couple’s six-week tour of Australia and New Zealand. Although it was deemed unconventional by Buckingham Palace, the move was widely praised by the media and the public.

She also played an active role in their education and regularly collected them from school.
