Prince Andrew: Virginia Roberts photo ‘very difficult to prove’ if it is real or fake

In a Newsnight special, Prince Andrew finally broke his silence over sexual assault allegations against him. The Duke of York spoke to BBC presenter Emily Maitlis about his relationship with convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein. The Queen’s son denied that he had any sexual contact with an American woman named Virginia Roberts, who claims she was forced to have sex with him aged 17.

Ms Roberts provided a picture of herself with the Prince at the home of Ghislaine Maxwell, Mr Epstein’s then girlfriend.

Ms Maxwell is alleged to have been the procurer of girls on Mr Epstein’s behalf.

Prince Andrew told the BBC that he didn’t remember meeting Ms Roberts at all.

He said: “I don’t know if I’ve met her. I have no recollection of the meeting.”

Prince Andrew also said that the meeting and dance she described between the two of them “never happened”.

Of the photo, he said: “I have absolutely no memory of that photograph ever being taken.

“From the investigations that we’ve done, you can’t prove whether or not that photograph is faked or not because it is a photograph of a photograph of a photograph.

“So it’s very difficult to be able to prove it but I don’t remember that photograph ever being taken.”

He continued: “That’s me but whether that’s my hand or whether that’s the position.

“I have simply no recollection of the photograph ever being taken.

“Here’s the problem, I’ve never seen Epstein with a camera in my life.”

Ms Maitlis pointed out that it was Ms Roberts’s camera that she lent to Mr Epstein so he could take the photo.

The Prince said: “Listen, I don’t remember that photograph ever being taken.

“I don’t remember going upstairs in the house because that photograph was taken upstairs.

“We can’t be certain as to whether or not that’s my hand on her left side.

“I have no recollection of that photograph ever being taken.”
