Police car skewered by rising bollard after they drove over it

Two police officers were left red-faced after their patrol car got stuck on a bollard which had unexpectedly risen from the ground.

Onlookers to the unfortunate incident in Leeds city centre did not offer much sympathy for the stranded cops who were caught out last Friday afternoon.

Video showed the car stuck with its chassis showing as the man filming shouts ‘never’.

Street salesman Saul Webster, 23, saw the incident unfold on Friday, October 8.

He said he heard a ‘loud bang’ and a commotion in the Kirkgate area of the city.

Officers who had been in the car had pulled up to talk to a group of homeless people when the bollard lifted, leaving them stuck.

Saul said the officers were left baffled by the incident and walked away from the car to get help.

He added: ‘I heard a loud bang but couldn’t see anything because there was a police van in front of the car but when that moved, I saw the car. Everyone was shouting and screaming and them.’

A West Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: ‘A police vehicle was lifted by an automatic bollard while on patrol in Kirkgate in Leeds city centre at about 2.30pm on Friday. The vehicle was recovered to be inspected for any damage.’
