Calls for the line of succession to skip over Prince Charles and go straight to Prince William have been met with a strong dismissal. Vanity Fair Royal Editor Katie Nicholl addressed the suggestion on 60 Minutes Australia. She warned that it would go against “everything the Queen and the Royal Family are built upon”.

Ms Nicholl told viewers: “A lot of people think it would make more sense to skip a generation and let the Crown move straight to William and Kate.

“Possibly they might prove a more popular king and queen than Charles and Camilla.

“The constitution is essentially everything the Royal Family is built upon.

“So the idea of breaking it is really something that’s not going to happen.”

She continued: “We will have King Charles and Queen Camilla before we have King William and Queen Catherine.

“But I think a lot of people believe that the real future of the monarchy, the longevity of the monarchy, lies in William and Kate.”

Clive Irving, author of ‘The Last Queen’, also issued warnings about the future king.

He explained that the Duke of Cambridge has been beating his father in popularity polls.

He told Sky News Australia: “You want a reinvigorating, generational change, which he isn’t.

“The polling shows that William is already up by 40 percent favourable polling.

“Charles is down to about 32 percent, which is embarrassing.”

Mr Irving added: “With the Queen gone, think that anyone under 40 is more and more going to ask questions.

“They’ll think, ‘what’s the point of having this crew around anymore?’

“The royals would have to justify their existence far more rigorously than they’ve had to so far.”

The author also spoke about Charles’ sons and their wives in comparison.

He contrasted them by warning that the future king is “not a figure of the moment”.
