NHS doctor uses TikTok to show why you shouldn't wear gloves to the supermarket

An NHS doctor has explained why you should not wear gloves to protect you from coronavirus at the supermarket.

People across the country have started to wear masks and gloves in public places following the Covid-19 outbreak.

But Dr Karan Rangarajan, who works as a surgeon for the NHS, has explained why wearing gloves instead of regularly washing your hands could put you at greater risk.

‘You’ve got your gloves, you’re at the supermarket, you’re touching things – there you go… germs,’ he said in his TikTok video.

‘You keep touching more things throughout same day with these same gloves, germs everywhere. You’re accumulating germs.

‘Your glove is now more full of germs than your hand would’ve been if you washed each time.

‘Remember, with these same gloves you’ll be touching your steering wheel, you might accidentally touch your face, transferring the germs to yourself.

‘And then when your’re changing the gloves you might actually be touching the glove itself.

‘Just wash your hands, be sensible, stay safe.’

Meanwhile, a former emergency room nurse in Michigan went viral after she used paint to explain why gloves could cause people more problems as they attempt to avoid coronavirus.

Molly Lixey made the video after a trip to the supermarket alerted her to the cross-contamination which can take place.

‘I was doing some painting around the house and it hit me that paint would be a perfect medium to use to explain this [cross contamination],’ she told CNN.

‘It terrifies me to think people believe they’re safe only because they are wearing gloves and not have them be aware that they could still be harming themselves or others.’
