Meghan Markle’s ‘real reason’ for taking Disney’s Elephant role exposed

This will be the Duchess of Sussex’ first job after leaving royal life, having given up her acting career when she married Harry two years ago. She was previously best known for playing Rachel Zane in the legal drama Suits for seven successful series. Now back in the game, Meghan’s choice for new role could stem from her beautiful romance with the Duke.

The documentary will follow “one family’s extraordinary 1,000 mile journey across Africa on an adventure that will change their lives”.

But Africa is close to Meghan’s heart for a very special reason ‒ it is where she and Harry fell in love.

Just “three or four weeks” after their first date, Harry whisked Meghan off to Botswana.

In their engagement interview, Harry explained: “We camped out with each other under the stars and we enjoyed five days out there, it was absolutely fantastic.”

He described it as the “perfect place” for him and Meghan to get to know each other.

In fact, the link here is two-tiered, because Botswana actually has more elephants than anywhere else on the planet.

Poaching is really affecting numbers across Africa, but in Botswana, conservation efforts have seen the elephant population triple over the last 30 years to as many as 160,000.

They are so numerous that last year the country made the controversial decision to overturn a ban on elephant hunting.

Around 45 percent of Botswana has been set aside for conservation, one of the reasons why the country has such an abundance of wildlife.

As well as elephants, Botswana is particularly good at rhino conservation, an animal which is often hunted for its horn.

The Khama Rhino Sanctuary in the east of the country is the home of many black and white rhinos, closely monitored by dedicated conservationists.

However, Meghan and Harry are not the first members of the Royal Family to be interested in elephants.

Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, are royal presidents of the charity Elephant Family.

The charity was originally co-founded by Camilla’s brother Mark Shand in 2002, who dedicated his life to trying to save the Asian elephant.

Mark tragically died in 2014 aged 61 after falling over outside a bar and sustaining a serious head injury.

After his death, Charles and Camilla took on Elephant Family as a patronage and secured £20million to preserve 100 elephant corridors across India by 2025.

In her 2017 biography ‘The Duchess’, Penny Junor explained how Camilla is trying to “further Mark’s dream” but added that she still finds his death difficult to deal with.

Charles and Camilla said the Elephant Family’s work “is helping to secure a long-term future, not just for Asia’s elephants, but for the wider biodiversity of Asia’s forests and wild landscapes, which are vital to the survival of us all”.

They will likely watch Meghan’s new documentary, which will be released on Disney+ on April 3.

The Duchess of Sussex’ role in the programme was announced yesterday by Disney on Twitter and Buckingham Palace issued a brief statement.

It read: “Disney have this morning (in LA) released info regarding the voice-over project The Duchess of Sussex participated in for the Disney nature film Elephants, which will debut on Disney+ April 3.”

The beginnings of this project may date back as far as July 2019, as a video surfaced in January of Harry and Meghan at the premiere of The Lion King last summer where Harry can be heard saying: “You know she does voice-overs?”

Disney chairman Bob Iger replied: “Sure, we’d love to try.”
