Meghan Markle royal timeline: A look back at Meghan’s life as a royal

Meghan Markle concludes her time with the Royal Family today, as she departs the Firm alongside Prince Harry to set up a new life in North America. The change comes less than two years after the royal joined the family, and just three months after Harry and Meghan announced their intentions to leave.

2016 – Harry and Meghan meet

Prince Harry and Meghan’s relationship blossomed between June and November 2016.

They met through a mutual friend who set them up on a blind date based on their mutual appreciation of charity work.

2017- Meghan prepares to enter the Royal Family

Meghan Markle revealed the various “challenges” which came with being a royal girlfriend in 2017, saying it was “surprising” how things changed.

Speaking to Vanity fair in September, she thanked the “support system” around her for helping her deal with the new changes.

Harry and Meghan announced their engagement in November of the same year, and the future Duchess of Sussex said she was “naive” about her expectations for joining the family.

In the same interview, Prince Harry said he tried to warn his fiancee of the pitfall of royal life “as much as possible”.

Meghan added: “We were hit so hard at the beginning with a lot of mistruths.”

Together they said they were “surprised” by the level of interest in their relationship.

Meghan would officially join the Royal Family in May the following year.

2018 – Meghan and Harry become the Duke and Duchess of Sussex

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry married on May 19, 2018, in a ceremony watched by millions all around the world.

The couple announced they were pregnant with their first child not long after Princess Eugenie’s wedding in October the same year.

Rumours began to rumble that a feud erupted between the Sussexes and Cambridges, which defined much of the following year.

2019 – A royal feud

In March 2019 the Duke and Duchess of Sussex departed Kensington Palace, where they lived alongside several other royals including the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

They moved into the taxpayer-renovated Frogmore Cottage in Windsor as rumours of the feud intensified.

The couple welcomed their son, Archie Mountbatten Windsor, in May the same year, and they announced their intention to give him as “normal” a life as possible.

They announced they would not spend Christmas with the Royal Family in Sandringham as per tradition, instead opting for a six-week holiday in Canada.

2020 – A final departure

In January 2020 the couple announced their intention to split from the Royal Family and become independent citizens in Canada via Instagram.

The move prompted fury from other royals, who found out via television, and Sandringham emergency discussions set an official leave date of March 31.

Today, they will officially lave the Firm at midnight into a year-long probation period, when they can still return to the family if they so choose.
