Meghan Markle row: Princess Diana would ‘put two fingers up’ at Royal Family over Duchess

Former royal protection officer Ken Wharfe said he believes Diana would have loved Harry’s choice in wife, if she had lived. He told the Daily Mail she would have seen Meghan as the future of the Royal Family and would rush to her defence in the event of any criticism. Unfortunately, the Princess of Wales never had the opportunity to meet either of her daughter-in-laws due to her tragic death in 1997.

Mr Wharfe said earlier this month: “Diana would have liked that her son had married an American divorcee, a woman of mixed heritage.

“I can see Diana putting two fingers up to the monarchy on the strength of that one, saying: ‘This is fantastic, this is the future of this family, this is the way it has to be.’”

There are many who see the Duke and Duchess of Sussex as modernising the Royal Family.

In 1936, Edward VIII had to give up his throne in order to marry an American divorcee, Wallis Simpson.

More recently, Prince Charles was unable to marry Camilla because Diana was seen as a more suitable match for the prince – although of course he did marry his long-time lover in 2005.

However, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex happily married last year despite Meghan being an American divorcee.

She is also the first biracial person to marry a senior member of the Royal Family.

Meghan and Harry have broken the mould in a number of ways – splitting from Kensington Palace and setting up their own household in Frogmore Cottage for example.

What’s more, Meghan gave birth to baby Archie in private and had the first picture of the infant several days later; his christening was also private.

Princess Diana also did things differently when she married Prince Charles – shocking the world with her candid words and compassionate actions.

Diana and Meghan have something else in common too – they are both able to interact with people with warmth and sincerity.

Mr Wharfe implied that Meghan has this skill due to her experience as a celebrity, and Diana through sheer hard work.

He said: “Meghan is a consummate performer with her theatrical background, which gives her a huge advantage in dealing with the pubic.

“I remember her first public engagement with Harry in Nottingham, I think it was, and later at a radio station in Brixton and she was so brilliant in dealing with the media and talking to people with a sincerity in her voice.

“Diana would have liked that. I don’t see that there would have been any jealousy on Diana’s part.

“Diana had taken some time to achieve that high performance level, but that all came as a result of hard work.”
