Piers Morgan has accused the couple of capitalising on their royal ties, and has urged Meghan and Harry to ditch their official titles. In an exclusive interview with Express.co.uk the outspoken GMB host said the pair should no longer be referred to as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex as they appear to “want their royal cake and eat it”.

Mr Morgan criticised the couple for wanting to have it all and accused them of using their titles for monetary gain.

He told this website: “If they want to be truly free and independent they have got to drop their titles.

“It seems to me they want to have their royal cake and eat it.

“They want to have all the commercial buyer power of being the Duke and Duchess of Sussex without any need to do any of the dirty little jobs on a wet Wednesday in Stoke when they have to visit an old peoples home or something. And I think that’s not on their agenda.

“They want to be in Hollywood drinking tea with George Clooney so I think you can’t have it all.

“If you want to go off and be celebrities like the Kardashian’s then drop the royal titles.”

The journalist made similar comments in his new book ‘Wake Up’, where he urged the Queen to strip the couple of their royal titles.

Writing in the book, he said: “I would unceremoniously strip these deluded clowns of all their titles with immediate effect and despatch them back into civilian life.

“Nobody tells the Queen what to do.”

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry stood down as senior royals earlier this year and have recently moved to Santa Barbara, California.

The couple agreed to a number of measures when they split from the royal fold and were told they would no longer have the authority to use the term ‘royal’ for promotional material or appearances.

As a result, the pair had to ditch their brand name “Sussex Royal”.

But the couple were allowed to keep their royal titles and are still officially known as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

Demands have been growing for the couple to be stripped of their royal titles in recent months, especially after their comments on the upcoming US Presidential election.

Republican Congressman Jason Smith sent a letter to the British Ambassador of the US asking for the pair to be stripped of their royal titles.

He said: “It is my view the titles and privileges they retain by permission of Her Majesty the Queen, given with the advice and consent of her government, prevent the Duke and Duchess from separating comments made in a personal capacity from their official position within the British Royal Family.

“Therefore, by allowing the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to retain their titles, and these political comments to continue, the British Government is effectively condoning interference in the 2020 United States Presidential Election from officials at the highest level of the British establishment.”

Recent polls have also suggested the British public would back a decision to strip Meghan and Harry of their royal titles.

A poll of 4,174 British adults by Savanta Comres found 68 percent backed such a move.

‘Wake Up: Why the world has gone nuts’ by Piers Morgan (HarperCollins, £20) is out now.
